Holy Moly!
Is anyone reading the new Marvel Max take on Starr the Slayer? Last month's 1st issue got lost on the racks but I managed to score 1 amp; 2 yesterday. This is underground comic's Richard Corben on art; the Corben that draws a man getting hit so hard in the face that your see teeth, bone and brains blow out the back of his skull; the Corben that draws his women so busty and buck-naked that you had to hide his comics from your ma. I'm amazed that Marvel, even under Max, let this slide by.
Writer, Dan Way has that same 60's, underground style on this book. The two together are really doing something here.
I read the Warren Ellis Starr back in the day and sort of remember the Roy Thomas/Barry Smith version and they were great.
What's cool about this book through it's history is that the supposed writer of the comic(Len Carson) gets sucked into his own creation. Dan Way and Corben magnificently honor this take.
If you're a Corben fan or a Starr the Slayer fan....Buy this comic!
I picked up the first issue and really enjoyed it, BUT, I decided to wait for the inevitable trade. Hopefully it'll include the original '70s story by Thomas and Smith.
Speaking of Corben, when will we see his classic work back on the shelves? Den, The Bodyssey, Arabian Nights... there's so much stuff out there that hasn't been reprinted in decades. And it would sell!

You're wiser than I am. I just have no self control in waiting for the damned trades.
Hey Protector, when you referenced the quot;Warren Ellis Starrquot;, are you talking about Newuniversal, or was there another Starr story by Ellis?

No, the New Universal version. As I recall, he had black hair in this version.
Yesterday I picked up 2 and 3, and read the first three issues together. While issue 1 was good on its own, I gotta say I'm not impressed with this overall. Daniel Way is very talented at writing in verse, but the story is pretty boring, and it doesn't focus much on Starr - odd, since it's supposed to be his origin!
I'm giving this one a thumbs-down and will instead pick up another SSOC collection from Dark Horse.
who?

Steam has definitely been lost, that's for sure, but w/ only one more ish left, I'm in for the close. The art is great but you're right, the story is all over the damned place. I think that these kid writers are just unable to handle that 60's, underground, linear style that Corben works so well with.
I think it was Truman, who wrote the recent Conan's Grandfather story Corben illustrated, now that worked as well as this Starr book should have. |
